Submission of Electronic Files Requirements & Guidelines

Trumbull Printing is fully electronic and all printing is produced using PDF files. Pages are paginated using Imposition Publisher software and sent directly to the RIP. PDF files can be sent to us using a FTP site [File Transfer Protocol] or CD. E-Mail files must be less than 4mb.

SOFTWARE:

We require that you send files in a PDF Format. Please contact a customer service representative if help is needed to create your PDF files. Be sure to embed all fonts.

Our software applications include: Adobe Acrobat, Indesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Pagemaker, and QuarkExpress on Macintosh and PC. [We do not accept Microsoft publisher files].

COLORS:

If your document includes spot color, the colors should be created according to the following:

If the spot color is to be printed CMYK it will convert and print using process inks. If a spot color is to be printed using Pantone colors it must be represented as a PMS color in your document. The correct Pantone ink color will be used when it is being printed.

COLOR TYPE:

For clear and sharp copy, use sans serif fonts such as Futura, Helvetica or similar for small type. Reverse type reproduces best with large bold sans serif fonts. The same is true for color type. Thin serif fonts are difficult to read in color or reverse type. It is recommended that four color type and/or small four color reverse knock-outs be avoided because it is difficult to achieve good reproduction. Black type that uses four color blends should never be used.

ART WORK:

RESOLUTION/DPI
Black & white and color photos should be scanned at 300dpi for the size that is placed in your layout program. If your art placed in Quark is reduced to 20% of its original size, you should reduce it in Photoshop to 20% and re-input it. You will benefit in two ways. First, the image will reproduce better and second, the file will be much smaller and quicker to output. Remember to convert your RGB scan to grayscale or CMYK.

Supplied art must be opened in Photoshop and image size checked. This should be set at 300dpi with the resample image box unchecked. Convert to CMYK or grayscale and save the file. Importing to your page layout software you can use it at 100% or smaller without losing quality.

Prior to creating the PDF in either Quark or Indesign check your links to ensure that they are all ok.

Illustrator files: If Illustrator is used to create an ad or art in your ad, select all type and change it to outlines. This eliminates the need for fonts.

Use the Photoshop and SNAP recommended color settings to accommodate for reproduction on newsprint. Also available are the proper job settings for Acrobat Distiller.

Please contact our pre-press supervisor or customer service representative if you have any questions on any of these topics.
